CAPITOL RECORDS
LABEL VARIATION CODE NUMBERS
AND PRESSING INFORMATION EXCERPTED FROM

by BRUCE SPIZER

Meet The Beatles !

Capitol (S) T-2047
Being the first CAPITOL LP release, it is important to focus on this
historical and most recognized album and list the
FOUR basic label variations that can be distinguished by the
performing rights organization ( BMI or ASCAP ) that appears
in parentheses after each song title.
The significance of the varying performing rights information
is that it will enable you to identify the order
in which the labels were printed. This generally coincides with the
order in which the records were manufactured,
and help the "Complete-ist" fill in their Collection.
Sophisticated Dealers and Collectors are beginning to
realize that Stereo pressings with the
FIRST THREE LABEL VARIATIONS
are much less common than the much preferred
and touted Mono copies of "Meet The Beatles!".

Additionally, 80% of Capitol's albums were pressed on
the East Coast, therefore the West Coast pressings of the
FIRST THREE LABEL VARIATIONS
of "Meet The Beatles!" are clearly more scarce.

FIRST LABEL VARIATION
Printed without  BMI or ASCAP. Only a small number of these
first-run labels were printed, and the only confirmed First Label pressings
were printed by Keystone on the East Coast.
The accompanying Cover should have the Factory #3 Scranton designation.
Records without the BMI or ASCAP designations are relatively scarce and are
worth significantly more than the other subsequent variations.
During a time (1964 to late 1967) when Mono was the dominant album format,
STEREO copies of Meet The Beatles without BMI or ASCAP
are very rare and highly collectible !

SECOND LABEL VARIATION
The second labels prepared for the album lists ASCAP as the performing rights
organization for all songs on the second side and all songs on side one except
I Want To Hold Your Hand, which is credited to BMI.

THIRD LABEL VARIATION
The third labels prepared for the album credits all songs on side two as ASCAP,
except for I Wanna Be Your Man, which is credited to BMI.
Side one credits the first two tracks to BMI, with the remaining four songs to ASCAP.

FOURTH LABEL VARIATION
The fourth and final variation credits only the first and third songs of the
second side to ASCAP, with the other four songs on side two and all songs on
side one credited to BMI. Capitol documents indicate this
final change was approved on 3/7/66.

MONO VS. STEREO
Stereo copies of Beatles albums manufactured prior to 1966
are significantly RARER than their Mono counterparts.
It's estimated that only FIFTEEN percent of
Capitol's Beatles albums manufactured prior to 1966 were Stereo.

Meet The Beatles
Capitol T-2047 Mono, East Coast, #3 Cover, 1/20/64
FIRST LABEL VARIATION

ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT KNOWN EXACTLY WHEN CAPITOL BEGAN SHRINK-WRAPPING
ITS ALBUMS, VISUAL EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT MEET THE BEATLES!
WAS NOT SHRINK-WRAPPED WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY ISSUED ON JANUARY 20, 1964.
DURING THE END CREDITS OF THE FIRST U.S. VISIT DOCUMENTARY,
WHICH WAS FILMED IN EARLY FEBRUARY 1964, FANS ARE SHOWN PURCHASING
COPIES OF THE ALBUM IN A NEW YORK RECORD STORE. THE ALBUMS ARE NOT
IN ANY PROTECTIVE BAG OR SHRINK-WRAP. WHILE MANY RECORD
RETAILERS DISPLAYED THE ALBUM WITHOUT PROTECTION, SOME STORES
PLACED THE JACKETS IN LOOSE POLY BAGS.

BEING OFFERED HERE IS AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF HOW EAST COAST
FIRST PRESSINGS WERE PACKAGED BY INDEPENDENT DEPARTMENT STORES :

THE ACCOMPANYING MINT "AS NEW" COVER REMAINS
WRAPPED IN ITS ORIGINAL & RARE
"SEARS AND ROEBUCK IN-STORE BAGGY WRAP".

ACTUAL PHOTOS OF THIS ITEM :

NO DOUBT THESE EARLY, FIRST LABEL COPIES WERE SWEPT
OFF THE SHELVES DURING THE THE ONSLAUGHT OF BEATLEMANIA
AND MOST HAVE BEEN PLAYED BEYOND RECOGNITION
AND TOSSED OUT. TODAY, ONLY ABOUT 20 TO 25 EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN
VERIFIED SO FAR TO SURVIVE, AND MOST OF THOSE COPIES ARE
IN VG OR LESS CONDITION. THIS MONO EXAMPLE IS A
VERY HIGH GRADE EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY HISTORIC ALBUM !

This Cover is virtually FLAWLESS and MINT ! Peering under the Baggy Wrap,
the Cover looks as though it came out of the factory yesterday !
White borders are "snow" white. Back Cover is AMAZING ! Impeccable.
Baggy has a tiny tear on front under the Capitol logo in upper right,
yet no affect at all to Cover.
Record is a GORGEOUS Near Mint with tremendous sheen to the
grooves and the original luster is very much intact.
Some very light and superficial inner sleeve "whisps"
are barely visible, that do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl.
The First Issue Labels also grade a stunning Near Mint.

With Original 1st  issue
Royal Blue inner sleeve.

AS AN ADDED BONUS TO THIS SET IS THE INCLUSION
OF AN ORIGINAL NEAR MINT MINUS EDITION OF THE
"SPECIAL BEATLES ISSUE" OF THE
NATIONAL RECORD NEWS
DURING CAPITOL RECORDS' BEATLES CAMPAIGN !

THIS FOUR PAGE 15" x 11½" TABLOID WAS SENT IN MASS QUANTITIES
TO THE CAPITOL RECORDS' SALES FORCE. IN A CAPITOL MEMO
DATED DECEMBER 23, 1963, IT STATES THAT :

"PUBLICITY DIRECTOR FRED MARTIN CONCOCTED A
SIMPLY MARVELOUS VEHICLE FOR SPREADING THE BEATLE STORY -
A FOUR PAGE TABLOID NEWSPAPER WHICH LOOKS DECEPTIVELY LEGITIMATE.
BUT OF COURSE IT'S OUR DOING, AND ALL IT CONTAINS IS
PICTURE AFTER PICTURE AND STORY AFTER STORY ON THE BEATLES".

PAGE TWO CONTAINS A PHOTO OF CAPITOL EXECUTIVES
POSING AS THE BEATLES, COMPLETE WITH BEATLE WIGS.

BEATLEMANIA !
With The Beatles

Capitol Records of CANADA, T-6051 Mono, 12/2/63

When word spread to North America of The Beatles phenomenal success overseas,
Capitol of Canada decided to release the Beatles second British LP, With The Beatles.
The record company altered the front cover of the album by adding favorable
quotes and re-titling the record Beatlemania! With The Beatles.

This LP holds the distinction of being the FIRST Beatles album
released in North America (2 December 1963), preceding
Vee-Jay's "Introducing The Beatles" and Capitol's "Meet The Beatles".

The back cover of the Canadian release is essentially
the same as that of the British LP,
with both featuring the same liner notes by Tony Barrow.

Beatlemania ! was issued as part of the label's "6000 Series",
which concentrated on pop albums, and was assigned number T-6051.
The LP was ONLY ISSUED IN MONO.
Unlike Vee-Jay and Capitol in the U.S.,
Capitol of Canada did not delete any songs from the British album.
Thus, Canadian purchasers were treated to all fourteen songs !

This is the Original First Issue 1963 Pressing.

ACTUAL PHOTOS OF THIS ITEM :

The condition of this cover is a gorgeous and crisp Near Mint, with dark,
bold graphics. No ringwear at all in the center of the black graphic area.

The back cover is equally clean without any ringwear evident,
and just a "hint" of the typical age mellowing along the mouth opening.
The Record grades a superb Near Mint with deep, gleaming grooves.
Complete with the Original Capitol Of Canada Inner Sleeve.

Collectors of Capitol releases, especially that of the
MEET THE BEATLES Lp would complete the series with this
GREAT and UNIQUE Capitol of Canada release !!

TWIST AND SHOUT
Capitol Records of CANADA, T-60
54 Mono, 2/3/64

Capitol of Canada's second Beatles album TWIST AND SHOUT
was also issued as part of the label's "6000 Series",

The LP was ONLY ISSUED IN MONO and
features twelve of the fourteen songs
from the first British LP release "Please Please Me", plus the A sides of the two
previously released singles "From Me To You" and "She Loves You".

The album's front cover is fantastic -featuring the same black & white photo that
was used for the group's "Twist And Shot" EP on Parlophone.

The back cover has extensive liner notes on the group and its members,
the often-used Dezo Hoffmann portrait that appears on the picture sleeve
"I Want To Hold Your Hand", a miniature picture of the first Canadian
release "Beatlemania!" Lp, and the track listing.

This is the Original First Issue 1964 Pressing.

ACTUAL PHOTOS OF THIS ITEM :

The Cover is a very nice Near Mint Minus (borders VG+++) with just some handling wear
and a touch of toning along the mouth's edge on the back cover. No splits, no ringwear at all.

that had not previously appeared on a Canadian album.

This is the 1966 Pressing.

UNDOCUMENTED
MEGA-RARE

FIRST ISSUE OF 3rd REVISED STEREO LABEL
MIS-SPELLED "I CALL YOU NAME"

WITHOUT running time on Track 2, Side 2 only !

(NOT DOCUMENTED IN BRUCE SPIZER'S "CAPITOL ALBUM" BOOK)

The initial 1st run labels for this LP (which are the most commonly found) do not
have the running times for "Long Tall Sally" or "I Call Your Name" on Side 2.
But after Capitol received the tapes for these two tracks,
the company revised the label copy by adding the times for the two songs !!

When the BMI credit replaced the ASCAP credit for the song "I Call Your Name",
Capitol once again revised its label copy - BUT ONLY ON THE STEREO Labels !!
The printer for the East Coast Stereo label not only changed
ASCAP to BMI after "I Call Your Name", but also dropped the
running song for the song. Thus, the Stereo variation has the
running time for "Long Tall Sally" - but NOT "I Call Your Name".

BUT WAIT !! THESE REVISED LABELS HAVE "I CALL YOUR NAME"
MIS-PRINTED AS
"I CALL YOU NAME" ! THIS LABEL WAS JUST
RECENTLY DISCOVERED - AND NOT DOCUMENTED IN
BRUCE SPIZER'S GREAT BOOK "THE CAPITOL ALBUMS".

When the error was realized, Capitol corrected the song title, and once again
printed another revised label, still without the running time on "I Call Your Name"
(SEE NEXT ITEM # LP601 BELOW).

The #3 Scranton Cover is in stupendous LIKE NEW Mint Minus condition,
and still remains in the original SHRINKWRAP. The Record is UNPLAYED MINT -
a STELLAR example. The previous owner added the running time of "2:08" for
"I CALL YOU NAME" in black pencil after the BMI credit,
which does not detract and is hardly noticeable :

(ACTUAL SCAN OF LABEL)

One cannot get much better than this for an early 1964 STEREO Beatles LP -
with an UNDOCUMENTED Label at that !

Later, revised labels list all songs as BMI, including Words Of Love.

The Beatles Story On Capitol Records, PART TWO : THE ALBUMS”.
ON PAGE 163, MR. SPIZER WROTE :

"CAPITOL LATER CORRECTED THE LABEL COPY TO SHOW THE

"

LATER, MR. SPIZER THEN AUTHORED AND RELEASED
THE WONDERFUL BOOK "THE BEATLES SWAN SONG",

MONO CORRECTED LABELS ARE MUCH
LESS COMMON THAN STEREO REVISED LABELS.
THE CAPITOL ALBUM BOOK DOCUMENTED
EAST COAST LABELS WITH THE FULL TITLE.
WE HAVE NOW CONFIRMED THE WEST COAST
MONO VARIATION WITH THE FULL TITLE"
.
